After a hard fought battle, United triumphed over their bitter rivals Chelsea in Moscow, home of Abramovich. United dominated the 1st half of the game and Ronaldo rose to the occasion and headed in the 1st goal of the match. The game was played on artificial ground and there were many slips literally in the game. VDS slipped on an important occasion allowing Lampard to score the equaliser.
The saying if there is no peril in war, there is no glory in the victory. How true is that, Scholes suffered a gash on top of his right eye 20 mins into the game. The cut was inflicted by the boot of Makelele and in the 2nd part of the last half of the added time, Dider Drogba was sent off for violent conduct.
After a clattering tackle, the red and blue shirts were surrounding the referee and Tevez started shouting and waving at the Chelsea players. Soon enough, this sparked into an intense atmosphere which led Drogba to slap Viddic in the face IN FRONT of the REFEREE... How retarded is that! When given his marching orders, Drogba whined like a little baby and refused to leave the field of play. The linesman and 4th official then escorted Drogba off the field.
This match not only had some moments of brilliance, it had its moment of history. Ryan Giggs, the most decorated footballer in English football, come on as an 80th minute substitute for Paul Scholes. Both players were given a standing ovation. Scholes was recognised for his hard work done in midfield and Giggs was applauded to be the longest serving and most loyal player to the club.
Giggs set up in midfield freeing up Ronaldo to the front. Although age has caught up with him, Giggs, not as fast as he was in the past, made many valuable impacts to the game. His vision, experience and touches helped United to continue pressuring Chelsea for the crucial 2nd goal.
Chelsea on the other hand were no push overs. They stood their ground and had 2 nerve-wrecking moments when Drogba and Lampard hit the post. Chelsea's attack came wave after wave and United's back four did their job. Rooney dropped back to the heart of the defence with Ronaldo up field and Tevez the furthest man upfield.
Rooney sent every loose play by Chelsea to Ronaldo in the heart of the field. Ronaldo with his speed, accuracy and arsenal of tricks helped United to at least 4 counter attacks which came to naught as Petr Cech rose to the occasions to deny United of all chances.
Rooney was also substituted by Nani as the game went on to extra time. There were many tired faces and tired legs out there. When the last half of added time was over, all the players were close to exhaustion. United brought on Anderson before the last whistle and the penalty shootout loomed.
Fergie was in his usual jittery and jumpy moments. He gave brief instructions. And when the referee signalled for the penalty shootout, all the players lined up to take theirs. Ronaldo already taken the highlight by scoring the 1st goal also took the lowlight. His penalty was denied by Petr Cech and Chelsea scored all of their penalties. At the 5th penalty, it was United 4 Chelsea 4 with a penalty in hand.
The skipper, John Terry stepped up to take the "winning" penalty but he missed it. United saw the break and continued scoring their other 2 penalty. Van Der Sar was the man of the moment, diving low to keep out Anelka's penalty.
United were triumphant and the fans were all ecstatic. The mere 20,000 United fans in Moscow out-shouted, out-cheered the 80,000 Chelsea supporters. Roman Abramovich looked at his team in disgust and he must be wondering, how much will it cost his wallet to outwit Fergie's brain.
The stage was set and United were crowned the KINGS of Europe. Ronaldo no doubt stole the moment and as he proclaimed himself, the best player on the planet. Fergie now adds a new title to his already massive accolade, the greatest manager on the planet.
The United 11 fought hard and toiled despite the heavy rains which washed all the Blue's hope away. Double Champions, double KINGS...
